Android Unknown Tracker Alerts: Scanning and Finding Steps

Learn which devices Android tracker alerts work on, why a notification may never arrive, and how to search for incompatible BLE tracking tags.

Android’s Unknown Tracker Alerts feature can show a notification when it detects that an AirTag or compatible Bluetooth tracking tag separated from its owner moves with you. The feature is supported on Android 6 and later; the menu location may vary with phone maker and version.

The critical word here is compatible. Per Google’s current help page, automatic alerts work with trackers compatible with the Find Hub network, compatible headphones, and AirTag. Unbranded BLE tags or some pet tracking devices outside this list may produce no Android alert even when nearby.

An alert does not confirm bad intent. A nearby person’s tag, a borrowed item, or a public-transport trip can also create a notification. Still, if the map shows long-term, repeated movement with you, investigate in a controlled way.

Turning the alert on in Android

On most devices with Android 12 and later, follow this path:

Settings → Safety & Emergency → Unknown Tracker Alerts

On some devices with Android 11 and earlier, the option may be in:

Settings → Google → Personal safety & device safety → Unknown Tracker Alerts

Make sure “Allow alerts” is on. Keeping Google Play Services current also matters. If you cannot find the setting, type “tracker” in the search field in Settings.

How to run a manual scan?

Tap Scan now on the Unknown Tracker Alerts screen. Google notes the scan can take about 10 seconds. The results can show compatible devices separated from their owner and near you at that moment.

A device appearing in a manual scan does not prove it is on you. In places such as apartments, cafés, or parking garages, someone else’s tag may be near you. To tell the difference, if safe:

  1. Repeat the same scan at a different point.
  2. Move items such as your bag, coat, and car away separately.
  3. Watch which item the device keeps appearing with as it moves with you.
  4. Note the same result at different times.

No results also does not exclude all risks. If the device is near its owner, not broadcasting, out of range, or incompatible, it may not appear in the scan.

How to search for a device if no notification arrives?

Android’s automatic alert and the “Scan now” result are filtered to the supported tracking ecosystem. If the phone never alerts but you suspect a specific car, bag, or item, additionally scan active BLE broadcasts. AntiAirtag Mini and Touch listen to BLE advertisements in range without waiting for the operating system to support the device or decide it moves with you.

This method can make visible a tag that does not join the official alert protocol but broadcasts Bluetooth. In return, the result list will also include watches, headphones, car accessories, and sensors, so one broadcast alone is not proof of bad intent. Watch whether the same target repeats with the car or item in different places and strengthens as you approach the source.

Reading the alert map correctly

The map in the notification shows where the tracking tag was detected together with your phone. It does not show where the tag owner checked the device. Screenshot the map with the date and time.

A route appearing only on one short bus trip does not carry the same weight as a repeating route stretching from home to work and back. Repeated movement, a physical finding inside your belongings, and previous following behavior must be assessed together.

Play sound and “Find nearby”

Tap the alert and use Play sound. Per Google, playing a sound on an AirTag is not reported to the device owner. If you cannot hear the device, slowly move through your bag, pockets, and car interior and try again.

On supported Find Hub accessories, a “Find nearby” option can offer an indicator that changes as you approach the device. Available features may differ on AirTag and other products. Since metal, walls, and the human body affect the Bluetooth signal, do not measure from one direction only.

If the phone scan cannot narrow the target, a detector locking onto the selected BLE broadcast can ease following the signal trend from different angles. Remember that the detector does not definitively identify the device and can only see devices in range with an active BLE broadcast during the scan.

Recording the details of the device you find

Hold the AirTag to your phone’s NFC antenna. The antenna is usually in the upper back of the phone. The page that opens may carry the serial number and sometimes the owner’s masked details. Save the alert map, device details, where it was, and photos of the physical device.

Google notes that on some compatible tracking devices, the device identifier and the owner’s hidden email address can be shown. Every maker’s details and disabling method differ; follow the official on-screen instructions.

Does turning Bluetooth off stop an AirTag?

No. Turning Bluetooth or location off on your phone, or switching on airplane mode, does not stop the tracking tag from reporting its location through other devices around. To stop the tracking, the physical device must be disabled per the manufacturer’s instructions.

But immediately turning the device off may not be the safest choice in every case. If you think disabling could agitate the suspicious person, first move to a safe public area and ask for help. In near danger, life safety comes before possible evidence.

Where can you find previous alerts?

Per Google, past tracker alerts can be viewed from the Unknown Tracker Alerts screen and may be deleted after 48 hours. For that reason, screenshot important alerts without delay. Turning alerts off entirely may also delete past information.

Help and applications

If you do not feel safe, move to a crowded place, tell a trusted person, and call 112 in an emergency. Show the device and records to the police or gendarmerie. If there is a risk of one-sided persistent stalking or violence, ŞÖNİM and the 24/7 ALO 183 line can also provide guidance.

Search without waiting for an alert

Narrow down the suspicious Bluetooth signal step by step.

AntiAirtag detectors show active BLE broadcasts with a strong antenna even when your phone produces no alert, and help you approach the source of the signal you select. They cannot by themselves confirm that a broadcast is an AirTag or a malicious device.
